Improve your skin’s appearance with these organic body products

In Philippine Star Column on August 11, 2012 at 2:47 am

Got body issues? Who doesn’t? A majority of my friends, of various ages, sizes and nationalities, always have something about their body that doesn’t fit with the ideal they carry around in their head. So, we head to the gym, the ashram, or one of the latest aesthetic centers that has the newest so-and-so machine that promises to zap all the Cheetos you noshed on over the weekend (right). As we all sign up for the battle against the bulge, we often overlook the most important component of our corporeal vessel: the skin that keeps it all in. I’ve seen many a perfect silhouette ruined by flakey “bits” (i.e., dark and dry elbows and knees, or scale-y like heels and palms). Having just come from a trip that made me go through an onslaught of temperatures left me with a lot of sloughing off to do. My skin, although normally on the oily side, doesn’t react well to the dry air blown by air conditioners, and even a plane ride can make my skin shed so I always stash a hand moisturizer that doubles as a foot moisturizer in my hand-carry. As I’ve gotten older, I’ve also noticed that my skin doesn’t retain moisture like it used to, in spite of the humidity, so I’ve had to resort to a few extra “steps” during and post-bath.

Scrub on scrub off: The Farm at San Benito’s Body Polish is best for high-skin shine!

One important step is to exfoliate. I am quite active and my bathroom rituals are always done in a semi-rush so I do indulge myself in a once a week total scrub. If it’s been a particularly harrowing workweek, then I do it twice. This is probably more psychological on my part, feeling that I’m literally “scrubbing” off all the dramas from the day. Exfoliation, I’ve learned, is not only integral to having smoother and more radiant skin, but the action itself can improve blood circulation throughout your body. This ritual has led me to try several body scrubs on the market, but it wasn’t until I spent a couple of days at The Farm at San Benito that I fell in love with their Salus Per Aquam body polish. There are two variants — The Purifying Body Polish-Yin Yang Lemongrass and the Stimulating Body Polish Barako Coffee (P950/300g). I took home the Lemongrass, one, preferring the smell and also because I was told it was easier to wash off than the Barako. Made with Lahori Salt, San Benito’s ANH Coconut Oil, grapeseed oil, lemongrass essential oil and vitamin E (plus other natural goodies such as beeswax and various fruit extracts) this polish smells amazing and the salt component is “coarse” enough so that you truly believe it’s removing so many impurities from your body, without scratching your skin. Since the polish is already so enriched with some of Mother Nature’s finest, it’s recommended that you do not use soap to wash off any excess oils. Application should be done on damp skin and in a circular motion, doing this once a week (perhaps twice if your skin is extremely dry) removes dead skin cells, improves circulation, purifies the skin and stimulates the lymph system. Focus on areas that are more prone to sweat, like the underarms, inner thighs, and don’t forget your heels, elbows and knees!

What happens though when you find yourself in a situation where it’s “too late to exfoliate”? Then a body cream with skin-enriching properties is definitely something you should have on-hand. I’ve found the Bare it All Cream of V&M Naturals (P285/100g or P695/ 300g) is a dream cream come true. With V&M Naturals’ now-famous emu oil ingredient as the main component, combined with shea butter, jojoba oil, mango butter, papain and peppermint extracts giving your skin a tingle when you rub it in. I’ve actually gotten so attached to this cream that I bring it with me sometimes for a massage. One masseuse even commented that dark patches on my body seemed to lighten up almost immediately. Other users have experienced a reduction of chicken skin, and like me, lightening of dark areas-not to mention immediate relief for very dry and calloused skin. On another personal note, I actually had a zit forming on my chin one night and due to laziness I actually rubbed a bit of this cream on the almost-zit. By the morning, it was gone. Since the texture of the cream is slightly heavy, it’s preferable to use at night or when you travel and aren’t sure what weather conditions are waiting for you when you land. Because of the peppermint component it can also ease tired feet and legs after a long day of walking around in killer heels.

Rescue and recover. V&M Naturals Bare it All Cream is an immediate skin saver

Cures for your crowning glory-hair reborn

In Philippine Star Column on May 19, 2012 at 1:05 am

Weather or not, hair I come” is my beauty battle cry nowadays. Since the infernal heat, sudden rains and stifling humidity all give my brush and blow-dryer quite a workout. Limp locks, or uncooperative curls, can take away from even the most dazzling outfit, and from one’s self-esteem. Think about it, most people look up first at you, not at your designer bag or shoes, which, believe me, will still not save you from a bad hair day. Love the salon and the stylist you go to, and don’t be afraid to look into products that keep your follicles strong and happy. How to give your beloved mane a boost? Start with your scalp. Probably the most dramatic treatment you can do is undergo a series of vitamin, and mineral-infused shots of Mesohair (applied with a syringe “gun”) directly into your scalp (P2,000) and followed by laser-enhanced heat with a Revage Machine (P5,000) at The Skin and Laser Clinic. This non-invasive method helps re-stimulate your scalp’s ability to grow hair. If balding or alarming hair loss is not a concern, then this can be done once a month as a preventive measure. It’s almost like a medical spa for the hair, and it would be advisable not to shampoo for 24 hours after each session in order to let all the nutrients be fully absorbed into your scalp.

Head shot. Vitamin and mineral boosts to your scalp through mesohair therapy.

If your hair has gone to hell and back due to over-processing (think rebonding, color, perms, blow-out abuse) then give it a good soak with one of the newly launched line of Moroccan Argan Oil Shampoos from The Souq Organics (P1,250/200ml bottle). Rich in antioxidants such as reconstructive keratin, fatty acids and of course, pure argan oil, one use can help improve the elasticity of your hair, making it more manageable especially if you decide to take a hairdo detox and are in-between treatments.

Mane squeeze. Moroccan Argan Oil shampoo has restorative powers

For more specific issues, the girls behind V & M Naturals have taken their already famous emu oil ingredient and put it into their hair care line. This particular oil that has been documented as a skin saver can now be found in their Hair Story Shampoo (P755), Never A Bad Hair Day Conditioner (P805) and Hair Masque (P595). These address dandruff, which crops up rather viciously due to changes in the climate and temperatures, or detangling hair that just refuses to be combed through. It is important to note that even with all above-mentioned products and treatments, one of the best defenses against any scary hair day is a balanced diet combined with regular activity and restful sleep. All these work in tandem to keep away stress — the biggest culprit in the battle against the uglies, so always remember that happiness is the real head-turner.

Happy new hair. V&M Naturals to leave those bad hair days behind

Glow on: Beauty miracles with emu oil-infused products

Skin superheroes: Pure Emu Oil and Poppy Plush beat-up the beauty bad guys

Do you have a little beauty find? My newest “treasure” came in the form of a gift. A small package that had a lot of punch so to speak and it was called V&M Naturals Smooch Lip Detox. My friends had raved about it so much they decided to give me one so I could see (and feel) for myself its effects. This lip balm went on smoothly, without that greasy over-oiled texture and had a minty ting to it. I’ve now been using it before I go to bed and after I brush my teeth in the morning; it’s so pleasurable to use that I sometimes don’t want to put lipstick over it. Thankfully this problem was solved when I tried out the same brand’s Butter Lip Tints. They could be worn over the lip balm and even added more moisture and protection (the Smooch Lip Detox has SPF) in a shade of either pink, salmon, wine or berry that got richer the longer you left it on. My two favorites were the Pink Posies that made me feel like I was a teenager again, giving me a bright pink pucker and the Cherry Berry, a deeper (yet subtle) shade for evenings out. Best of all I could keep reapplying these tints without fear they would dry my lips out.Eventually, I was able to get a hold of V&M (which stands for Venus and Mars) Naturals’ founders Jamie and Justin Tan, siblings who had the vision to promote wellness in beauty for both men and women. “We got inspired when our cousin who suffered from skin asthma and psoriasis for almost 30 years saw the wonders of Emu oil.” explained Jamie in an e-mail interview, “We let her try our (now) famous Poppy Plush Emu-based soap and 100% Pure Emu oil on her skin allergies and wounds for two weeks. She came back to show us that it healed, with no marks or scars. From then on, our determination to reach out to people like her was so strong and now thousands of our clients are living proof that it worked wonders on them, too.” This story from Jamie intrigued me and I asked for some samples of their products, with the Emu Oil at the top of my list to review.

Eyecandy: Mineral eyeshadows in myriad shades

A little background: I was developing a rather angry zit on my chin, so this area became my “patch test” for the Emu Oil that same night. The oil itself was pretty nondescript and light — and, well, effective. In 24 hours my zit was gone! Don’t ask me how, that same spot on my chin just felt “smoothed out” by the time I went to bed the next night.

Soap opera: Best-selling emu oil-infused bars of Lulur, Poppy Plus and Jagermeister

Needless to say, I got excited to try more of the products. There was the Jagemeister Soap that indicated it was good for open pores and clearing out blackheads and whiteheads and there was also the new Mineral Makeup Line (MMU) to dig into. I am a stickler for reading labels so I took note that almost all the products contained the “magical” Emu Oil. Further research led me to find out that it was regarded as one of the best elixirs to cure all kinds of skin ailments such as pimples, insect bites, wounds, burns, bleeding gums, hair loss, dandruff problems and even lessen the visibility of dark circles. I’ve been using the soap for almost a week and although I haven’t seen it wipe out my blackheads, it has certainly done something for my pores (along with an after application of the Emu Oil) I’ve know been asked what foundation I’m using even if I have nothing on. In terms of the MMU Line it’s only the blush that I’ve gotten to try and the V&M Shades of Hue Mineral Blush in Hot Pinch is a very complimentary shade for Filipina skin. I do plan to look more into using their makeup as their products do not contain boron nitride, bismuth and even talc, which have long-term damaging effects on not only the skin but even the internal organs.

Aside from using ingredients that are not harmful and effective, the products are also reasonably priced. The Smooch Lip Detox for example sells for P170 and the famed Pure Emu Oil goes for P425 for a 30 ml bottle and P700 for a 50 ml bottle. The Tan sisters also told me that most of their products are made for men, women and even kids. V&M Naturals are proven to be hypoallergenic and are used by some parents to treat cases of skin asthma on their children. Since my early experiment (Operation: Zit on Chin) I have seen a continuous improvement in my skin and my lips, and I feel

that the more I use these products, the healthier my beauty regime has become. At the end of the interview Jamie remarked, “We decided to launch the line to serve as an inspiration to many, to remind them that no matter how depressing their skin condition is with their skin problems, there is still hope to recover.” I guess in this particular situation hope can be bottled.

Tinted love: Different shades for the prettiest pucker

Smooch-ify your lips with this buttery balm!

In Living a Life Off-Center on January 18, 2012 at 7:14 am

Lip-locked and loaded

Dry lips, chapped lips, flakey lips is nobody’s idea of sexy. With bi-polar weather, extreme indoor and outdoor conditions due to arctic temperature controlled a/c’s to sweltering humidity, all contribute to the state of your pucker so lip balm I find to be a mainstay in anyone’s grooming or vanity kit. Yes, men, you are not exempt from this rule, a six pack will not make up for a shedding lip (shiver).

Two good friends of mine were bazaar regulars during the Holidays and came upon this natural lip balm. Their testimonials to me were very convincing “It feels so good, not oily or ‘heavy!” said one, who was a former beauty editor of one of the country’s most read lifestyle magazines. The other, a former editor-in-chief of a wedding magazine remarked on how pink her lips became after regular use. I was sold. I’m always on the lookout for lipbalm since I travel so much and I’m always in and out establishments that I sometimes feel are doubling up as meat lockers.

I searched high and low for this charmingly named Smooch Lip Detox by V&M Naturals, but since I had given most of the Christmas and weekend bazaars a miss, it was proving an impossible find. I asked my two girlfriends to help in the search and they surprised me with an early 2012 gift of the lip balm! I was so excited to try it I actually unscrewed the cap and applied it right away. The immediate effect was a minty, cool feel on my lips. It was also not sticky and runny and I appreciated the fact that it came with a SPF of 15 and was marked “proven hypoallergenic”. It’s been almost a month now of regular use and I can safely say I can’t wait to use it when I have the chance. It’s almost like a beauty crutch and I try to apply it 5-10 mins before putting on my usual lipstick. I also apply it right before going to bed and have noticed less lip “lines” and a smoother texture.

Now, if only to be able to find a new tube when this one runs out! There is a website listed but last time I clicked on it, it was still under construction. If any of you have any leads, I would surely appreciate it!

May you have smooch-ready lips at all times, especially as Valentine’s is just around the corner. 😀
