Janie’s got a (lace) gun…

Filipino Visual Artist Nikki Luna has created a sensation in the International Art World.

Check out her interview on a local news program:

These pieces broke records at a recent Sotheby’s auction. I so do love lace, even if it’s meant to dress such a dangerous, violent man-made tool of death.

Definitely not sugar and spice

Ironically, the pieces are far from representing a beauty in violence. Luna, is very active in her advocacy which champions women and children’s rights…against abuse. Through art therapy courses and hands-on participation, Luna uses her talents to heal these communities, providing an alternative outlet, when words don’t seem to be enough.

I interpret her pieces in two ways, one, that nothing can glamorize or prettify something that can kill and hurt and destroy. A gun in lace, is like a wolf in Carolina Herrera, prettier, but not any less dangerous. Maybe this is what Luna sees in her community work, that the damage may have already been done to one’s essence, and it will take more than just a wardrobe change to fully heal.

The second is that life is like a lace loaded gun. The choice to bear arms or to not, to fight, or defend, and not necessarily through masculine, territorial means, but softer, more graceful means. The gun, even when feminized this way, is no less powerful.

Again, these are just my thoughts. I look forward to what Luna has next on exhibit. Power to the Pinay, and I hope more artists like her get recognized abroad for their work in the art world and in the real, very, very, real world.
