Mercury in Retrograde-How to Deal with it

In Living a Life Off-Center on August 4, 2011 at 2:12 pm

Reposting from a good friend, you guys feel something’s going (or been going awry) since mid July…take a deep breath as you may feel off-centered in many ways til September:

Mercury in Retrograde (Aug 2 to 26, 2011)

Hang up and hang on....

What To Expect & Keys To Dealing With These Dynamic Energies according to Elizabeth Jones:

It is quite likely that you will experience some of the more challenging or difficult aspects of this influence. So I have listed here some things that you may experience are during this time:

** You may feel ungrounded and off center.

** You may feel spacey, disoriented and even confused or dizzy at times.

** If you are “ultra sensitive” to your surroundings you may pick up on others fear, confusion, etc. Be sure to clear your space often! (Taking a shower while visualizing any toxic or negative or draining energy leaving your physical, emotional, mental and etheric bodies is a simple, effective way to do this. ** And call on Archangel Michael if you feel you need extra protection or buffering.)

** The “veils are thin” between the realms. As a result you may sense things that you don’t ordinarily. ** This may be through your vision, hearing or even impressions. Please know that just because you are “picking something up” does not mean it is accurate or real. Ask that the frequency be raised. Then “check out” again what you are perceiving. OR sleep on it, certainly before you take action based on a hunch. This said . . .

** Intuition will be stronger for many, so it would be good to include these insights into your decision-making process. In fact, your intuition may be more accurate than your logic-reasoning mind.

** Your imagination may be hyper-active now. Keep in mind this may not always be a positive thing. Don’t let it take you in uncomfortable directions!
Here are some both practical and spiritual ideas that will help you to deal with the above as well as ways to raise the frequencies of this influence:

*** Clean and clear off the clutter from your work space, altar or meditation space. This clears the way for you to receive undistorted messages, healing, insights and guidance from your higher realms that is less likely to be distorted or unclear.
*** Adopt the mindset that there is a spiritual aspect to everything that is going on and especially to what is occurring before you in this moment.

*** Ask for clarity and guidance about what that is.

*** Do pay attention to details, just don’t get lost there.

*** Get extra rest as the physical body will most likely not have as much energy as usual.

*** Pay careful attention to what is on your mind when you awake as it is certainly possible that you have a message waiting for you!

** Look for the mystical in everything as it may be most apparent if you really see what is right before and around you.

*** Reconnect with your vision! Find ways to get inspired! Do a vision board, read or listen to those things that inspire you, channel a message to yourself from your Soul. During this time the mind is more open that usual to being enlightened, illuminated and inspired.

*** Visualize what you know is a higher expression of your own Divine self. Hold that vision in your mind’s eye for a few minutes each day.
Sending you many blessings of Grace and Light during this most dynamic time

Mercury in retrograde-How to get ready this March

In Living a Life Off-Center on March 17, 2011 at 12:55 am

We’re about to roll into BOTH a Supermoon and the beginning aspects of Mercury in Retrograde this weekend. What exactly is Mercury in Retrograde and how does one prepare for this phenomena that occurs three, sometimes four times in a year? First, a little explanation on what Mercury signifies as taken from Susan Miller’s

When this planet retrogrades it gives us time to look back and reflect

This little guy is the mythological messenger, communicating information to one and all. Mercury represents non-emotional, highly rational, objective thought. Its placement in a sign determines that sign?s intellectual style. As a quickly moving planet, Mercury is flexible, responsive and adaptable. A big part of Mercury?s job is to disburse information; as such it rules perception, language, writing, editing, research, speaking, all kinds of learning experiences and learning styles and the assessment of data. It rules telecommunications, computing, software, electronic gadgets, the postal service, shipping, couriers, and all forms of transportation. This planet has a LOT of responsibility.

When Mercury retrogrades (something you will read about often on my website, Astrology Zone, at, it scrambles information, causes static and confusion. Its effects are felt universally. Mercury retrograde episodes are highly unreliable to sign contracts, complete important transactions, access accurate information or make big decisions.

The sign and house in which Mercury resides in one’s chart reveals a great deal about that person’s natural style of gathering and giving out information. Mercury also rules sibling relationships, maps, letters, travel plans, appointments, roadways, vehicles, advertising, publishing, sales, and public relations.

Mercury rules both Gemini and Virgo. Mercury spends about two-three weeks in each sign, but when it retrogrades, which it does three to four times a year, it can stay in one sign as long as ten weeks. Never far from the Sun, it takes about one year to circle the zodiac.

So how does one cope? First of all, remember that the BASIC lesson mercury retro has to teach all of us is how to be more introspective. Since it affects outside communication, deals, electronics etc, we need to find out how to communicate or get back in touch with OURSELVES. Take this time out to revisit old projects, old goals, wishes, dreams. Reconnect with friends and family you haven’t seen in a long time, or go visit an old haunt and see how you feel about all of them and more importantly how you feel about yourself.

I also picked this up from another website, some “instructions” on how to cope during a Mercury in Retrograde period which for us will be March 30 to April 23 but please do remember that effects will be felt a WEEK before and even a WEEK after.

An interesting note to take into consideration:

In 2011, Uranus moves into Aries for a SEVEN YEAR stay, bringing the winds of change. Uranus moves into Aries on March 11, 2011. The first Mercury retrograde of the year (March 30 – April 23) provides the opportunity to adjust our thoughts, attitudes and decisions about our issues and adjust our new direction as we move through 2011. The changes will be dynamic as the Aries floodgates will have been opened. The whirling changes will begin in January 22, 2011 and ramp up to a higher speed and intensity of change on March 11, 2011. The situations of trading places and experiencing major transitions occur and become a major course correction beginning with the Mercury Retrograde on March 30th and continue through April 23, 2011. (And when was the date of the earthquake and tsunami in Japan? March 11) This is certainly not an occurrence to be taken lightly.

Instructions (reposted from :

    • 1

Be prepared! Have a positive outlook that it is only a short period of time to deal with nuisances.

    • 2

Any important communications should be taken care of at least a week prior to the retrograde. Mental clarity is said to be impaired. Back up computer data. Studies indicate sudden electronic glitches become added headaches.

    • 3

Be certain your automobile is in top condition. Still, last minute minor problems could pop up to ruin plans. Make travel plans prior to the astral change or don’t travel at all due to mechanical issues and delays during this period.

    • 4

Contract signings should be delayed if the paperwork was not drawn up prior to the retrograde. Employment decisions should also be delayed unless everything is ironclad in the agreement.

    • 5

Shipments could be delayed or lost. Mail early and with correct postage. Do-overs will be prevalent, regardless of care taken to do it correctly the first time.

    • 6

Take nothing for granted during this time period, because that’s exactly when surprises will occur.

Keep your head on!

So what is Mercury in retrograde? A term that was uncommon about five years ago has become rather commonplace among my friends and colleagues. Of course, there are still many who don’t know, don’t care about what happens when Mercury, the planet that (if you follow Western astrology) symbolizes communication goes into retrograde (or backward motion). I have been keeping myself abreast of the periods of when Mercury in retrograde (MIR) occurs every year, as it does three to four times, lasting for about three weeks, although its effects can be felt a week in advance and even a week after.

For example, as the Christmas chaos is upon us, we find ourselves right smack in the middle of a MIR that will last ‘til the end of 2010. You may have felt its effects as early as Dec. 1 (because the period officially started on Dec. 9) and we will be in MIR’s snare ‘til Dec. 30, although I would advise you to take it easy until the first week of January. If you are a newbie to MIR, what might be experienced are situations of miscommunication, from mildly annoying (to dialing a wrong number) to rather serious like, in my family’s case, a “glitch” in the system of Hawaiian Airlines minutes before our trip that almost prevented us from boarding our flight (with tickets we had purchased two months before) and us having to pay twice just to make sure we could check in. Trust me, it was a very unwelcome and not appreciated start to what could have been a very relaxing holiday.

This was a double (or should I say triple) whammy as MIR tends to sink its teeth into electronics and travel as well.

I thought perhaps the best way to get a readable 101 course on what to do during MIR would be to ask an expert: Henry Palacios, a local astrologer who has been giving natal chart readings for many years, was more than happy to help out with his tips on how to get the most out of MIR. Yes, in spite of this almost month-long episode of mishaps, MIR is really there to teach you a lesson, and that is one of introspection and reassessment of your life. Read on for a little lesson in MIR.

MIR 101

1. There is really no definitive way of getting around the retrograde. Being aware of the inconveniences will keep you from getting upset. Since it has to do with communications, check vehicles before traveling, confirm flight bookings, try not to sign contracts or get into verbal agreements. There may be hitches after the retrograde. “A client of mine insisted on getting a contract signed during retrograde. After retro he realized that the time given him for delivery was too short. All his profit went to paying delay charges.”

2. With regard to relationships, whether romantic- or business-oriented, try not to commit within the period. There may be misunderstandings after. You can also use it to your advantage; if you’ve had a breakup before a retrograde, you can usually reconcile when retrograde comes around; whether you can sustain it is another story. In terms of business, you can maneuver a situation in your favor for as long as you cover yourself legally and have done your research on the pros and cons.

3. This is the time you should step back and see things for what they are. If things really have to move forward during a retrograde, have a lawyer check the contract, get your car fixed, back up your computer or your cell phone and don’t get upset if anything electronic in your life breaks down!

Palacios also emphasizes that MIR affects us all differently, as our natal charts are unique to us. The position of Mercury in your chart will give an indication of what will be affected during MIR, whether it’s business, relationship, finances, etc.

In my personal experience, MIR is all about looking back and deciding how to proceed. Old projects may or should be revisited and, perhaps, pursued if you feel that it’s time to start something “new.” Old friends may crop up, encouraging you to renew ties and relationships that could be more enriching to you in the future. More importantly, as it seems the outside world is not being cooperative, the Internet is slow, e-mails get lost, texts cannot be sent, or your cell phone shuts down, you are forced to have a lot more communication with the most important person in your life — which is you. Keep your emotions in check, reprioritize, learn patience and become more resourceful. These are some of the lessons that every MIR gives us, over and over again. Nowadays, I find myself more prepared whenever another MIR comes around, since I know that it, too, will pass, and hopefully I will be a more compassionate, grounded person after each one.

The Planet Mercury

Around 3-4x a year I get emails or texts asking me WTF is going on with the world? These periods normally fall around the time when the planet Mercury is in retrograde. You might then ask me WTF does that mean? Well, in a nutshell, Mercury, the planet that “rules” communication, travel and a whole bunch of other things like the industries of broadcasting for one, draws its energy back. So, this affects abovementioned  whole bunch of things. It’s also not a good time to buy anything expensive especially if they are electronic, like a cellphone, a laptop, Ipad, you name it, and I would also refrain from purchasing an automobile during this time period. I have also personally experienced that anything that is started at this point in time doesn’t reach fruition. Contracts that are signed are not honored, or, must be renegotiated after this time period, or, you could also wait til the retrograde is over before you sign anything. Miscommunication is also prone to happening so if you need to give instructions, give them as clearly as possible, as in K.I.S.S. and repeat as often as you can without being annoying. People will misinterpret one another, during this period so don’t be surprised if your friends, family (or even you) get into an argument or plans fall through when everything seemed to be perfectly planned. Traveling? Confirm, confirm, confirm, double check, double check, do everything doubly or even, triply.

But, let me leave a better explanation to the experts. Here are a few links that I’ve found that may help explain this phenomenon that affects EVERYONE in the planet. Some more than others, depending on where the planet Mercury falls in your natal chart.

Again, (since it is Mercury in Retrograde as I post this) I want to remind all of you that this period occurs 3-4x a year and last for about 3 weeks so, I would highly recommend you check out when it happens for the remaining months of 2010 and be prepared by noting down when it occurs in 2011. I particularly like Susan Miller’s page as it is quite friendly and has Mercury in Retrograde dates.

Be patient everybody! Mercury’s greatest lesson is to teach you how to become more reflective to enter a time of introspection since it seems, no one else in you outside world is cooperating, and this includes your cellphone, the internet, the TV etc! 😛
