Awaken your heart this weekend! Come and attend an Anusara Yoga Workshop

In Living a Life Off-Center on February 29, 2012 at 11:55 am

Open your heart! (and other things you need opened)

Anusara Yoga is what made me fall in love with yoga all over again after years of avoiding the mat. I’ve been practicing this for a little over year and I adore its gentle mix of meditation and movement. Don’t be intimidated by Desiree’s asana above, she’s been doing this religiously for a long time, plus she’s a raw vegan which I think makes her even more astounding to watch.

Let this healing yoga open your heart (as it did mine) to the infinite possibilities of life. There are four different workshops all held at The Infinity Tower in Fort Bonifacio (a stone’s throw from Serendra and High Street) which you can choose from and all levels will benefit, whether you’re a first timer, or a regular practitioner. Hope to see you in one (or all) of the classes!

Namaste!

Red wine has anti-aging resveratrol...cheers!

I have been a fan of Eat This Not That since I started my health makeover mid 2011. Aside from buying their books, I follow them on Twitter. Today I got some good news which is that one of my favorite beverages, red wine is ACTUALLY a good thing to include in your diet. Not too much of course, maybe a glass or two on a regular basis. Organic (and effective) solutions for hair and scalp at The Souq Organics

In Philippine Star Column on February 17, 2012 at 4:04 am

If there is one persistent beauty issue I have it’s the condition of my hair. Born to two parents who had baby-fine textured strands, I have always been conscious of how my (less than) crowning glory was treated. In my early teens I succumbed to the Aqua-Net bandwagon, and even (I cringe) the perm generation. I fell victim to parlorista after parlorista claiming their product would give me volume, bounce and shine. In the end, after a really good blowout (and countless foul-smelling chemicals) my hair would eventually go back to its natural state, which was limp and uneventful. I eventually gave up on the promises of trendy tress treatments and stuck to regular trims and shaping with Victor Ortega of Emphasis Salon and  monthly vitamin-infused meso-hair therapy at The Skin and Laser Clinic. It was the in-between periods wherein I suffered humidity, lazy styling days and change of weather (due to traveling abroad) bad hair days. No matter if it was an overnighter in HK or a month-long sojourn to Europe, my hair behaved while on holiday and just went full-on tantrum once I got home.

Usually, once I have a free weekend, I just coat my hair and scalp with a deep conditioning cream or oil and leave it on overnight; this used to work until a couple of months ago — say late 2011 when work-stress was at an all-time high and the birthday clock ticked another crucial year away. I’m not sure where I developed the rather annoying habit of picking at my scalp, but there was an itchiness and dryness that acted like a magnet and drew my fingers (and sometimes nails) there. It got so bad that I started doing it in public; disgusting, I know, and I am grateful that I had several friends who called it to my attention early on. The flakiness of my scalp was an added beauty insecurity and I refused to slather on dandruff shampoos that looked and smelled like they had been infused with radioactive ingredients. I turned to my beauty blackbook and noticed that The Souq Organics (the home of one of my all-time must-have products, Moroccan Argan Oil) finally opened its own store in Katipunan Ext., near White Plains, and they delivered. What was recommended was their Fushi line of hair products, the Total Repair Herbal Shampoo and the Repair and Soothe Herbal Conditioner, specifically from the range.

Vanity fair: Get your (organic) beauty fix at Souq International.

Fushi hails from the UK and has won an Ethical Award, has no sulphates, parabens, petrochemicals, artificial perfumes and is free from animal-testing. Plus, they are part of ecological project “Tree for Eternity,” as every purchase of a Fushi product allows the corporation to plant trees. Sounded like a company with a heart, so I was praying that the products worked. Over the Christmas break I used the two products consistently. The first thing I noticed? Even if I didn’t take the time out to blowout my hair before leaving in the morning resorting to toweling dry my hair rapidly in the car from house to office, my hair was  far from flyaway and seemed to shine.

Yes, maybe it was all in my imagination (the shine) but the smoothness was real. In fact, when I got home in the evenings, I realized I hardly had to brush my hair to keep it in place the entire day. Second, despite the moisturizing properties of both products my hair didn’t look oily and stringy, it just looked normal, which was a welcome change.

Finger-combing became a new habit of mine instead of picking at my scalp which, after a little over a week’s use had miraculously stopped flaking in that one spot. The shine on my hair is no longer an imaginary one and I firmly believe that the highlights I had put in before Christmas have become deeper and integrated well with my natural hair color.  My hair springs to life once dry and I’m assuming this is because of  all the organic ingredients and the absence of as many harmful chemicals as possible. Needless to say this dynamic hair duo has become my mane squeeze so to speak, and has gotten me so enthusiastic with the results that I’ve even looked into trying their “Really good Cellulite Oil” which is triple-infused with ingredients such as Gota Kola, an Ayurvedic herb known for its circulatory benefits, helping in strengthening the connective tissue in the skin and boost collagen as well as Green Coffee Bean, a well- known stimulant and diuretic that helps smooth the skin and boost the lymphatic system. What is essential to an effective product are great ingredients, not great marketing, and thankfully, The Souq Organics has made the effort to bring in products that don’t just look pretty but can actually help keep you pretty, long term.

Damage control: This shampoo helps your head and hair heal

Soothsayer: Herbal conditioner to help sooth dry hair and scalp

Charisma Jade Charm

In Living a Life Off-Center on February 12, 2012 at 2:22 pm

Hi all!

Leaving for a trip so I just wanted to wish you all a lovely Sunday and Valentine’s week ahead. Speaking about Valentine’s I was advised to purchase a Charisma Jade charm which is said to attract loving, romantic relationships. Or…just to increase your charisma and attractiveness, and who doesn’t want that?! Since it’s made out of jade I am soaking it in a bowl of salt water overnight in order to cleanse it. First thing tomorrow I will program it in the morning sun before setting off for the airport.

I’ve never had a charm like this before and it was hand-carved but I couldn’t figure out what the the figures were. Apparently, (and yes, once you see them you will always see them) they are two cats facing each other. The symbolism of this is a mystery to me, thank goodness I like the color green and those who know me well will think the cat figures are purr-fect.

Charisma Jade Pendant for a little purr-in purrfection?

I was advised to wear it close to my skin so part of my vacation will find me looking for places where I can have it mounted or even ‘strung’ so I can wear it like a pendant and see what energies it brings in. Going for positive vibes and thoughts on this one ;-)

Wishing you all happy and benevolent heart outcomes!

For those interested in this pendant, visit The Yin and Yang Shop of Harmony at the Mandarin Hotel Manila.

MANILA, Philippines – Love is a many splendored thing. Here, YStyle counts down the splendors we’re currently in like — okay, love — with. From the new anti-gravity yoga to sweet tomes to, um, upbeat break-up songs (we’re practical people), no doubt you’ll find something new to fall for.

1. Coming of age

Not just any old lady can pull off the eccentric old lady look. It has taken her years, decades even, to develop that particular identity and wear it so comfortably that it’s not a matter of dressing to impress — because she’s outlived whoever there was to impress — but as the exclamation point to a life lived well. We have come into an extremely ageist society obsessed with youth, where models are scouted in middle school and millions of dollars are spent fighting age, through potions and plastic surgery. Young Hollywood dominates the covers of magazines like Vogue and Vanity Fair as they do Bop and Tiger Beat, with stylist-picked clothes that transform them all into Zoebots. Individuality, it seems, is the provenance of the aged, and those who do recognize senior style for all its glorious subversiveness are offbeat individuals themselves. Fifteen-year-old blogger with an old soul Tavi Gevinson has always dressed like a kooky grandmother, and has aptly partnered with Advanced Style street photographer Ari Seth Cohen to honor all these singular ladies at a recent Fashion Week party. “Wrinkles and scars and imperfections are signs of life,” Tavi writes. “If an aging woman doesn’t take measures to erase indications that she’s built character through experience, if she can no longer be viewed as a sex object or as recently discovered and relevant, she may as well just disappear.” Big baubles, headdresses, orange eyelashes, and proudly lined, weathered skin are characteristics of the women featured in Advanced Style — everything incredibly close and extremely loud, nothing that erases them gently into background. The jewelry label Alexis Bittar brought back hot-flashing fabulosity to the public eye with Ab Fab’s Patsy and Edina (Joanna Lumley and Jennifer Saunders) for its spring/summer 2012 campaign. “Their fashion sense is ridiculous and they embrace it — every episode is pure fun and chaos,” Bittar told Vogue. Previously, Bittar collaborated with Iris Apfel, the 90-year-old doyenne of irreverent fashion, as well as Joan Collins and Lauren Hutton. Locally, we have writer and artist Gilda Cordero-Fernando, who is adored by younger generation style icons Cecile Zamora Van Straten, Mich Dulce, and Kate Torralba — all future funky grandmamas. “With (Gilda’s) self-described mismatched matches, she effortlessly fuses her youthful, quirky spirit with the confidence that comes from one who has really, truly lived,” says YStyle’s Kat Holigores. “Everything in her closet is precious.” — Audrey N. Carpio

Alt net: French Vogue’s Emmanuelle Alt lip-syncs to a Wham! hit in a video inviting readers to go-go to the magazine’s newly re-designed site.

2. Wham! bam, thank you French Vogue

To mark the debut of the new Vogue.fr site, the magazine’s editor in chief Emmanuelle Alt enlisted the likes of models Karmen Pedaru, Kendra Spears, Jasmine Tookes and Anja Rubik, along with fellow Vogue staffers, to cover the much-beloved (in the YStyle office, at least) Wham! hit Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go. Staying true to the video’s style — everyone’s garbed in white tees with sleeves cuffed above the bicep and white jeans — Alt prances on stage just like George before it all fell apart and the ’80s ended. But for two minutes and 53 seconds of pure unadulterated tongue-in-cheek nostalgia, Alt and co. are the shit. Bravo, French Vogue. Your move, Wintour. Might we suggest that other Wham! classic Careless Whisper? — Bea J. Ledesma

Etsy-betsie: The System of Objects (Radical Thinkers) by Jean Baudrillard in wonderful paper format is a vintage read radically riddled in pompous prose. But it’s truth, to be honest.

3. The system of objects

If the rise of the cyber flâneur indicated by Etsy marked a psychographic obsessed with heritage or cutesy history, albeit in a clean contemporist format, Jean Baudrillard’s The System of Objects from the late ’60s organizes the values we deposit by the objects we consume. Why do we acquire old things? The rise of flea markets do offer authenticity (and bargains) and far more is the assurance that it has lived longer than us or is far less temporal than things these days. If the formal (or proper) prose is any less Brideshead, bibliophiles and mindful consumerists will greatly benefit, in replacement of the Penguin “Love classics” reissue set. — Raymond Abrenica

4. Flamboyant color

We all know we can’t fully love another if you don’t love yourself. If you find yourself free on V-Day, make it the perfect opportunity to lavish well-deserved love and attention on the one you should love most: yourself.

Color is the best way to change up your look. It also works to banish that blah feeling from a so-over romance or get vibrant energy in for a new love object. Book a consultation with Lourd Ramos of Creations Salon, who says the hair look for now is extravagant, sophisticated and rock and roll. Lourd says go for soft fluid lines with ultra colored but natural tones of ash, mahogany, and copper all the way to ice blond. Get inspiration from actress of the moment Lea Seydoux who sports golden locks and ladylike looks for Prada’s resort print campaign. If you’re home alone, try Etude House’s amazing Bubble Hair Coloring. This amazing shampoo-type color gives vivid color (supposedly better than cream types) and is so easy to apply. It takes 30 minutes to get shiny gorgeous locks — no mess, no stress.

Love like a love song: A Cinematic Orchestra is background music for listening with eyes closed in pure poetry.

5. Feel your art beat

Candi Staton knew you had it. Florence and the Machine reiterated: “You got the love.” There is always a perfect, precise soundtrack for every awkward happy-sad moment, from being single to paying overwhelming bills. If stillness had a soundtrack, and solitude needn’t be silent, A Cinematic Orchestra’s All Things to All Men or To Build a Home is together and apart, with a bit of stoic drama. Hope There’s Someone by Anthony and the Johnsons is a clear-cut classic contender; watertight for the calm of slow-bathing rituals, before Lana del Rey’s “Born To Die.” It’s a matter of resilience, and following our own loves in our very own short, melodramatic lives, with stunningly beautiful music. — Raymond Abrenica

6. Go build a cocoon

The latest fitness craze is what they call a mash-up of yoga and Cirque du Soleil. If you’ve ever fantasized about twirling down from the ceiling in a silk hammock, then this class is for you. Fly/AntiGravity/Aerial Yoga lifts your regular yoga off the ground and gives your body support, helping you stretch further, hold poses longer and master inversions and other advanced poses that may have been too difficult or straining just on the mat. Not that this kind of yoga is any easier. The instructor at FTX Gym made it look graceful and artistic, but when it was my turn I realized I was still struggling with gravity and a weak core (hey, I gave birth a few months ago.) Balancing twists and warrior poses using the stretchy loop of fabric were straightforward enough, but when it came to a move that entailed circling from a backward bend to a forward bend and round again, that’s where all the hidden core strength comes in and that’s where I flopped around and stalled, like a carcass hanging on a butcher’s hook. If you’ve done TRX before, there’s the similar principle of suspension and trusting the straps to hold you up. Some yoga purists might scoff at this acrobatic fusion, but the benefits of yoga—alignment, balance, strength and agility—are all enhanced with the extra dimension of being suspended. As with all yoga classes, the best part comes at the end in savasana, and here you completely cover yourself in the hammock, wriggling like a caterpillar until you are completely cocooned. Book lover: A love story of definitions

8. The language of love

In The Lover’s Dictionary, penned by Dave Levithan, the author famous for Nick & Norah’s Infinite Playlist, each definition is a harbinger of memories, carving out a tale of relationship triumphs and woes with each word.

A sample:

Corrode, v. I spent all this time building a relationship. Then one night I left the window open, and it started to rust.

Levithan deftly parses out the minutiae of a relationship in a spare 209 pages, managing to winnow the complicated edges of an affair fraught with infidelity. It feels strangely familiar — as though the small ticks in the couple’s growth were universal, seen in life and on film — while offering the reader a voyeuristic glimpse at the narrator’s innermost feelings. The Lover’s Dictionary is a charming read, a virtual lexicon of terms that begins with aberrant and ends with zenith.

The book is available at National Book Store, P595. — Bea J. Ledesma

9. Nostalgia in a flash

Remember those Lomo cameras that exploded among the artsy types in the early 2000s? I was totally smitten with the fuzzy, distorted images that seem to mimic what the eye sees, minus all the hi-tech HD effects digital cameras have today. There’s something about the raw, vintage-like appearance that is so appealing in an old world, nostalgic kind of way. Somehow the memories get imprinted more firmly in your head. So delighted was I when I discovered — albeit late — this app. It instantly transforms my regular photos into works of art. And not only could I do the high-contrast Lomo effect, I have more than 10 magical themes to choose from! So somehow, that cheesy couple pic by the beach became a masterpiece. They say a picture paints a thousand words — this one just made it a novelty. — Anne Bella

10. Well-bread

There seems to be a dearth of food you can eat with your hands — portable meals that you can finish while journeying from one end to another. That’s why I love sandwiches. They can go high-low: they can be eaten surreptitiously in your office cubicle without causing too much of a stink, or they can be packed up for picnics with a chilled bottle of Chardonnay. Anyone who’s ever been on the Boracay Starvation Diet will appreciate a light healthy sandwich at the beach. My high school bud Karen and her husband Freddie Elizalde opened up this much needed sandwich store on the island. Super Submarine Sandwich Shop is a groovy, Beatlesque yellow space at D’Mall outfitted with glowing portholes and a Happy Diver mascot. You simply devise your own six-or-12-inch sub with a choice of fresh bread, fillings, veggies and dressing, and off you go, happy as a clam. — Audrey N. Carpio

J. Crew’s ship: A journey in style

11. A lesson in effortlessness

As every fashion freak knows, we always aim to look effortless, never mind the effort it actually took us to put it together. Achieving the disheveled, quirky but always appropriate outfit takes careful planning, fitting and a tricky game of correct proportions. It isn’t easy but J. Crew makes it, well, effortless. The sequins — mixed with cashmere — paired with a schoolboy blazer is like a beautiful piece of sculpture: fluid, striking and just so damn cool. They put a spin on casual wear, pairing everyday pieces with unexpected accessories that are as fashion-forward as they are organic. Styling is exquisite and quite attainable, which is how inspiring pieces should be for the rest of us mere mortals. It also helps that it’s basic enough for your man to understand and appreciate, that is, after a tutorial in mixing textures. Or two. — Anne Bella

12. His and hers

It’s that rational tale of co-opting couples living together. A “his and hers” dresser. A “his and hers” luggage tag. It’s self-preservation, just like a profile picture that doesn’t include your girlfriend in your portrait. Ayn Rand once argued that looking after oneself needn’t be necessarily “selfish” in The Virtue of Selfishness, a collection of essays on individual rights and challenges. In the age of practical ambidexterity or “code-switching,” it’s wonderful for sex-specific products to highlight what is yours and what is mine, without the versatility of double-faced Janus all the time. — Raymond Abrenica

13. Effortless happiness

The drink, and TV commercial we all grew up with, is almost like another food group to me. Where else can you find something so tasty and milky with a bit of tang that’s compact and good for you? It was love at first taste, and when I realize the many nutritional components, including playing a major role in developing the chemo drug irinotecan, I am convinced that my beloved yoghurt drink is a miracle in an 80ml bottle. A guy I was seeing got me a dozen bottles as a gift to remember him by, which makes this infatuation all the more special. It not only reminded me that romance is not lost in little gestures, but also that the most significant gifts can come in small packages. — Anne Bella

14. Valentine shows or 1,200 watts of tender feelings and devotion

Valentine’s Day is back again and seems bigger than last year’s. Restaurants are probably all booked so if you haven’t made reservations yet, I suggest you stop reading this, cross your fingers and call the most romantically conducive restaurant you know and hope they still have a table for you. Then continue reading. Girls’ expectations are seemingly larger and the pressure is indeed on, what with viral videos of happily hitched couples, artistically executed expressions of L-O-V-E that take your haiku “I love you” piece from the drawing board to your desktop recycle bin, perfect romances played by this actor-opposite-that-actress and those darned self-help books that practically dictate that if the guy you’re dating isn’t like Ryan Gosling then maybe He’s Just Not That Into You. Tough break, but may I feign righteousness and say it’s just giving the ladies what they deserve. It’s a battlefield out there, and we’re right in the thick of things. Perfect timing is essential, military precision and perfect planning are key but at the same time, it shouldn’t be entirely contrived. Leaving room for the unknown is risky but there is just so much more to gain when you place the right bets on how you want your V-Day to turn out. One thing is for sure, though: Feb. 14 must be your finest hour, day, or however long your Valentine’s plans are. So be sure to be on your best behavior and don’t be shy about putting your best foot forward.

Dress sharp: Don’t let the suit wear you, as ably demonstrated by She & Him.

My advice besides or in addition to the standard one-on-one romantic dinner would have to be the concert/show route. Choose an artist or concert that’ll set the mood for the night, one that you have an idea of what to expect, and one that you both will be willing to spend an hour or more of your time watching. Nobody wants to go through the ordeal of an experimental atmospheric noise blip band, though during other nights I’m sure it could be “enriching.” But if you do find yourself in this situation and can’t stand it, there are always some advantages of slipping out early and letting spontaneity take the wheel on your date.

For those in town, here are some of the shows on for your romantic rights.

Down on love? Love crystals may hold the key!

In Philippine Star Column on February 10, 2012 at 12:22 am

A rose by any other name: wrist accessories made of the queen bee of love stones, the rose quartz.

February is in full swing and if you’ve succumbed to its spirit of love and romance, then V-day should be highlighted with hearts in your calendar. If my previous statement just produced a feeling of heaviness in your chest (where lightness should be), you may consider adding a little crystal energy into your life for a little more luck in love. Now, why crystals? Because if there’s one thing a crystal is known for (aside from being really pretty), it’s that it helps enhance the energies that you program it for. Each crystal comes with certain traits and characteristics, so if you get the right type of crystal for whatever it is you want, it acts like a magnifier and aids in expediting the granting of said wish. Sounds good, right? It is. For centuries crystals have been used as tools for divination, healing, prosperity, protection and even love.  Nowadays, they are also used to accessorize or even beautify one’s appearance, so why not take advantage of this and glam up your ensemble while amping up your sex appeal at the same time?

Stonehenge sweethearts: (L-R) Love bracelets made out of rose quartz, rhodochrosite, rhodonite, kunzite, and aquamarine

One thing is for sure: even if you are already in a relationship, looking for one, or even trying to get over one (read: bad break-up blues), crystals can be programmed to help you enhance or re-energize aspects of your love life. They can be used to call in a potential partner or, ease your way out of heartache. If you are already sensitive to energy, sometimes just holding the right crystal will start to soothe your emotions. I personally have a couple of bedside crystals to help me calm down before I sleep (or for meditation) several in my bag for protection and a couple that I wear constantly to attract healthy relationships (both personal and professional) into my life.

(Not) a heart of glass: Rhodonite works with the heart chakra soothes it to its core, making it feel alive again and ready for love.

For those beginner crystal lovers out there, I highly recommend going to a reputable store. There are many crystal shops, for example, in Chinatown that sell bracelets, pendants and raw stones at cheap (almost too cheap) prices. Unless you have already developed an eye or knowledge for crystals, or you are close friends with the owner and the staff of the store, it’s easy to be fooled. Believe it or not, what you might think is a brilliantly colored life-changing crystal is actually just a brilliantly colored and cleverly cut piece of plastic. Also, if the staff isn’t trained well, they may choose the incorrect stone, and worse, not be able to teach you how to properly clean, program and energize it.

Rest in peace: Rhodochrosite is not only for love, it is also a good stone for inner conflict resolution.

Say what? Crystals (if they’re the real deal) are alive and full of energy, so like anything that is alive, it needs to be taken care of. Like a loyal friend, if treated with love it will do its very best to bring to you what you want and need. I personally favor the creations and selection I find at The Accessory Lab in Power Plant Mall, owned by Ingrid Go and Rodina Velasco, who take great pains in sourcing some of the best quality crystals (for display or to tote around) and design wearable pieces that can be for day or night. An added bonus is that their girls can show you how to clean and program whatever it is your purchase.

Soul-mating: Spirit quartz in its natural form is for world love. It sends out love in all directions.

So, as Feb. 14 turns the corner this weekend, what crystals should you take a shine to?

Rose Quartz

This pink-colored beauty is considered the queen bee of all love stones. It is the perfect symbol of what romantic love should be. Its energy invokes both tender and passionate love, making life more spontaneous and more exciting.

Rhodochrosite

A high-energy stone that teaches the heart to forgive and be open to a more positive attitude towards life. It encourages spontaneous expressions of feelings that can help enhance your flirtation skills and sex appeal.

Spirit Quartz

Because of its tiny points around its body, this stone helps in sending out love in all directions, creating an environment conducive for romance. You may even write down your wish list for traits you want in a partner on a piece of paper and place it under this stone so it sends out the right “signals” of attraction.

Danburite

This clear-colored crystal is a representation of the “twin flame,” and helps to find one’s soul mate or life mate. It also helps one relax and sleep better at night as an added bonus. Beauty sleep is very important during the pursuit of love.

Kunzite

A healing crystal, it is especially effective post-breakup. This helps the wearer get rid of emotional debris, opening up the opportunity and space to attract another love companion.

Aquamarine

For marriage and partnerships, this stone deepens love and fidelity most especially in times of trial and/or emotional upheaval during the relationship. It also strengthens self-confidence and boosts self-esteem.

Carnelian

Use this vibrant, orange-colored stone to activate and increase sex appeal. It can help in unleashing an irresistible aura of love and desire

Rhodonite

Known as a highly passionate stone, it can help recharge stagnant energy. Great for firing up a relationship that has gone dull or suffers from routine.

Red Jasper

And finally, for a little more spice in your love life, experts refer to this crystal as “the marathon stone.” Just use your imagination for that one, and get crystal creative.

Corner Tree cravings: When veggy fare really hits the spot

In Living a Life Off-Center on February 6, 2012 at 7:01 am

Meatless Monday today, and normally I spend my weekend meat-ing out, almost like a bear about to go into hibernation. This weekend though, I found myself after early morning yoga and meditation wanting my greens in a big way. Not just a fluffy salad which I can just make at home, but rather, creatively crafted vegetarian fare that packs in a gamut of flavors and textures!

Corner Tree Café on Jupiter St. seemed to be the best option. I had gone many years before when it first opened and truth be told I was far from impressed. The servings were small, the taste was so-so and overpriced. Due to a recent re-taking of the Art Of Living (AOL)course where we were recommended to go vegetarian I went back (after all those years) to have lunch with my AOL classmates. The food had changed, dramatically, and I loved and savored every bite of my Kofta with tomato sauce and rice dish. I enjoyed my food so much that I even made a date with an ex-colleague to have lunch there the following Monday.

What followed was pretty much as a disaster as it turns out the resto was closed  on Mondays! With our green dreams crushed, my friend and I relocated to the Mall were we proceeded to have a four cheese pasta and dessert. Fast forward to a Sunday where my yoga mate and I found ourselves happily seated at a corner table in Corner Tree, nearly salivating at the mouth in anticipation of what we were going to put in it.

I went for the specials that day: the falafel burger in pita bread:

Falafel fantastic! Juicy falafel encased in greens and pita bread

But of course, before the main course we decided to share a couple of appetizers, namely:

Spinach croquetas that were spicy and served witha special yogurt-like sauce:

Veggy croquetas that were spicy and filling

And a cup of lentil soup that tasted even better with a squeeze of fresh lemon. Tangy and tasty!

Hot lentil soup to soothe the soul-lemon squeeze a must!

At the end of this marvelous feast I indulged in dessert, which came in the form of a triple chocolate and almond biscotti with earl grey tea and soy milk.  This pretty much set me up for the entire day food-wise!

The light shines on my chocolate-almond biscotti

Suffice to say this biscotti was an absolutely delicious way to end my Corner Tree experience. It was moist, yet nice and crunchy with a perfect blend of chocolate and almond. Not too sickeningly sweet and heavy.

Next on my list is to go on another Sunday for their veggy brunch, baked eggs, poached eggs and pancakes!! Yum! Happy week ahead folks ;-)

Green your caffeine fix with an Eco-Cup!

In Living a Life Off-Center on February 4, 2012 at 5:08 pm

I am now a true believer of “ask and you shall receive”. Be it the Law of Attraction, the Powers of Manifestation, or just total, immense trust in a Divine plan, things that I’ve been requesting (either out loud or silently) come to me almost effortlessly and easily. Case in point, I have to admit that I need either a rich cup of coffee or my favorite earl grey with chai syrup and soy milk fix once a week (sometimes twice) and I even bought and personalized a tumbler from the coffee chain I frequent. Not only did this purchase give me a small discount every time I indulged in a piping out beverage, but I had a sense that I was scoring one for the environment by bringing in my own little tumbler.

As I have been moving around, I sometimes leave my tumbler in my house or my office-not a really good way to start the day when you realize your favorite tumbler is not really within arms reach. So, what did I decide to do? I decided to get another tumbler, but this time, the plan was to have someone give it to me. I posted on FB and Twitter “I really love my personalized tumbler, I wish I had another one…hint hint” and hoped for the best (or at the very least, someone to take my hint seriously). A day passed, and nothing, another day passed, and still nothing. The most I got was  a reaction of “Wow you have a personalized tumbler?” and that was it. I thought to myself, “Oh well, I guess I’ll get another tumbler for myself the next time I go for a cup of joe or earl”.

Cut to yesterday morning when a friend of mine who had moved to the US over a year ago, called to say she was in town and if I’d like to have lunch. I went to pick her up and being a true Filipina she said she had some pasalubongs (gifts) for me. The first thing she handed me was a bag of yummy Trader Joe’s Granola, perfect to put in frozen yogurt, or as a healthy snack I could bring around. Then, after my happy squealing had died down (I love granola) she said “Oh, and I thought if I gave you something else it would have to be ‘save the Earth’ type”and she promptly handed me a beautiful Eco-Cup:

Eco-up your cup!

I gasped in disbelief “Oh my God” came out of my mouth followed by “Did you know I actually wrote on FB and Twitter that I wanted another tumbler?” to which my friend’s eyes widened and said “Oh no way!” and she laughed “and you know I don’t go on Facebook!” there are no coincidences, really. I hugged her…what a way for the Universe to answer my hint! Big time.

These “non-paper” cups are made out of porcelain in two versions, one thermal one non-thermal. Mine was the non-thermal version that came with a silicone lid and sleeve, so holding on to it with a close to scalding concoction inside would be easier. Plus, it looks so darn cool. The porcelain could keep the heat in ( I order my drinks extra hot) and the silicon lid allowed for slow-sipping comfort, without the burn. Genius

Use and re-use me please!

I love this gift so much that I’m actually stretching my caffeine craving out til the weekend is over so I can trot into my chosen café of choice with eco-cup in hand. Next on my list? Perhaps to jazz up my mornings, a version in a colorful, playful graphic such as the ones one below:

Skin superheroes: Pure Emu Oil and Poppy Plush beat-up the beauty bad guys

Do you have a little beauty find? My newest “treasure” came in the form of a gift. A small package that had a lot of punch so to speak and it was called V&M Naturals Smooch Lip Detox. My friends had raved about it so much they decided to give me one so I could see (and feel) for myself its effects. This lip balm went on smoothly, without that greasy over-oiled texture and had a minty ting to it. I’ve now been using it before I go to bed and after I brush my teeth in the morning; it’s so pleasurable to use that I sometimes don’t want to put lipstick over it. Thankfully this problem was solved when I tried out the same brand’s Butter Lip Tints. They could be worn over the lip balm and even added more moisture and protection (the Smooch Lip Detox has SPF) in a shade of either pink, salmon, wine or berry that got richer the longer you left it on. My two favorites were the Pink Posies that made me feel like I was a teenager again, giving me a bright pink pucker and the Cherry Berry, a deeper (yet subtle) shade for evenings out. Best of all I could keep reapplying these tints without fear they would dry my lips out.Eventually, I was able to get a hold of V&M (which stands for Venus and Mars) Naturals’ founders Jamie and Justin Tan, siblings who had the vision to promote wellness in beauty for both men and women. “We got inspired when our cousin who suffered from skin asthma and psoriasis for almost 30 years saw the wonders of Emu oil.” explained Jamie in an e-mail interview, “We let her try our (now) famous Poppy Plush Emu-based soap and 100% Pure Emu oil on her skin allergies and wounds for two weeks. She came back to show us that it healed, with no marks or scars. From then on, our determination to reach out to people like her was so strong and now thousands of our clients are living proof that it worked wonders on them, too.” This story from Jamie intrigued me and I asked for some samples of their products, with the Emu Oil at the top of my list to review.

Eyecandy: Mineral eyeshadows in myriad shades

A little background: I was developing a rather angry zit on my chin, so this area became my “patch test” for the Emu Oil that same night. The oil itself was pretty nondescript and light — and, well, effective. In 24 hours my zit was gone! Don’t ask me how, that same spot on my chin just felt “smoothed out” by the time I went to bed the next night.

Soap opera: Best-selling emu oil-infused bars of Lulur, Poppy Plus and Jagermeister

Needless to say, I got excited to try more of the products. There was the Jagemeister Soap that indicated it was good for open pores and clearing out blackheads and whiteheads and there was also the new Mineral Makeup Line (MMU) to dig into. I am a stickler for reading labels so I took note that almost all the products contained the “magical” Emu Oil. Further research led me to find out that it was regarded as one of the best elixirs to cure all kinds of skin ailments such as pimples, insect bites, wounds, burns, bleeding gums, hair loss, dandruff problems and even lessen the visibility of dark circles. I’ve been using the soap for almost a week and although I haven’t seen it wipe out my blackheads, it has certainly done something for my pores (along with an after application of the Emu Oil) I’ve know been asked what foundation I’m using even if I have nothing on. In terms of the MMU Line it’s only the blush that I’ve gotten to try and the V&M Shades of Hue Mineral Blush in Hot Pinch is a very complimentary shade for Filipina skin. I do plan to look more into using their makeup as their products do not contain boron nitride, bismuth and even talc, which have long-term damaging effects on not only the skin but even the internal organs.

Aside from using ingredients that are not harmful and effective, the products are also reasonably priced. The Smooch Lip Detox for example sells for P170 and the famed Pure Emu Oil goes for P425 for a 30 ml bottle and P700 for a 50 ml bottle. The Tan sisters also told me that most of their products are made for men, women and even kids. V&M Naturals are proven to be hypoallergenic and are used by some parents to treat cases of skin asthma on their children. Since my early experiment (Operation: Zit on Chin) I have seen a continuous improvement in my skin and my lips, and I feel

that the more I use these products, the healthier my beauty regime has become. At the end of the interview Jamie remarked, “We decided to launch the line to serve as an inspiration to many, to remind them that no matter how depressing their skin condition is with their skin problems, there is still hope to recover.” I guess in this particular situation hope can be bottled.

Tinted love: Different shades for the prettiest pucker
